J B D  Computers  FAQ page

Q: My computer is running very slow and it was OK just a few days ago?
A:You may have a virus or spyware. Run your scanner and see if it cleans it up. If it's still running slow you might need some professional help. If you don't get help you might start pulling your hair out and we don't want that now, do we?

Q: My Internet connection is not working?
A:OK. How are you reading this? Well if you sometimes can't get on the Internet, try turning off your modem and then turning it back on in 30 seconds.

Q: My computer is taking a long time to shut down.
A:Let it do its thing. It's most likely running updates or indexing the file system. DO NOT turn it off unless it's taking over an hour, that means it's just locked up and needs to be serviced.

Q: everything on the screen looks real tiny?
A: You're to far away. OR, You have your screen resolution set to high. Try setting it lower. 1024x768 @ 60Hz is a good place to start. If you're still using an old display and it flickers, try setting the refresh rate to 75Hz. See your monitor manual for setting the refresh rate, setting it too high can damage the monitor. If you're using a LCD monitor it should not flicker.

Q: My computer takes a very long time to start up?
A:This is OK so long as it's no more then 2 minutes. If it's longer you my need to check for spyware. They like to load up at start up. You also might need to get a new computer to handle all the extra stuff you've installed over the years. If your computer is more the 10 years old. IT”S TIME!

Q: I have a MAC and I installed some new software and now it seems to be doing some strange things.
A: Time to upgrade.  Mac computers are good but the downside is they need to be upgraded often.

Q: I use Linux and I don't want to keep upgrading the OS each time a new distro version comes out.
A: Then don't. Just keep the updates current. Even after the support stops the OS should still work.
If they have an Enterprise version like Ubuntu does, I suggest using it. They are most likely to be more stable. See my Linux Page for more info about Linux.

If you have a question, submit it and I will try to answer it and I will also post it on this page.
